Darwin Digital teamed up with partners Ludus Digital to build a photo editing mobile App, Matchday Stickers. The app lets football (soccer) fans get behind their national teams by 'footballizing'...
At Darwin Digital, we have a few hardcore football fans. So, we thought it would be a great idea to build a photo editing app to allow fans to ‘footballize’ their social media photos and videos to celebrate this year’s World Cup in Russia and any other Match their team is playing in. Fortunately, our talented partners at Ludus Digital are experts in designing ‘sticker’ mobile apps and we were able to design and develop both native Android and iOS versions of mobile apps in less than 3 weeks.
The Matchday Stickers App includes more than 500 animated and static stickers; text editing; custom filters; over twenty countries to choose from and a dynamic scoreboard. We would have included all nations; however, our designers were beginning to see soccer balls when they closed their eyes at night.
For all the nations that we included in the App, we wanted to design custom stickers with slogans, chants and sayings from those countries. We also wanted the App to be launched before the World Cup. For those App developers out there, who have never developed a sports mobile application before, beware. Almost everything and anything has been trademarked, from World Cup 2018, Russia 2018, player names, squad nicknames to encouragements like “Allez Les Bleus” used by French supports (C’mon the Blues). Our team manually researched every slogan and sticker we thought of in the World Intellectual Property Organization or WIPO’s databases to make sure there was no copyright infringement. We generally think things like players names, events and so forth should be protected, however, we were also taken aback that sports organizations are trying to own anything related to the sports they effectively organize competitions around. Sport and games are really in the public domain and not invented by anyone still around to protect their IP.
In an upcoming blog, we will talk more depth about trademarks and intellectual property in apps.
We encourage everyone to download the Matchday Stickers App and send us feedback or ideas for stickers using the hashtag #matchdaystickersapp or #matchdaystickers on Instagram.
